Long Island’s Trigger Point Therapy Specialists
Let the experienced team at Mitchell Medical Group help you manage pain with our specialized trigger point therapy services, available for patients in the Long Island area. We treat people with fibromyalgia and myofascial pain using a variety of different trigger point techniques, and our experienced staff is able to tailor a treatment plan to your specific needs.
Although successful trigger point therapies tend to follow similar guidelines, each patient will present with their own set of symptoms and issues. We believe that it’s important to treat the individual, not just the condition. In addition, it’s also important to treat the underlying problem, and not just the symptoms. We do all that and more at our New York facility.
About Trigger Points
Trigger point injections was made prominent by Dr. Janice Travell. She mapped out the various areas of the body that could benefit from trigger point injections. Her most famous patient was President John F. Kennedy who suffered with intractable back pain. Dr. Travell was brought to the White House to administer the trigger point injections to give him relief.
We now know there is a relationship between fibromyalgia and myofascial pain syndrome, and there are other conditions that can cause trigger points, as well, such as a major injury or repeated stress on muscles. The term “trigger point” is actually just a fancy name for muscle knots—something most of us have experienced from time to time for any number of reasons. In people with chronic conditions such as fibromyalgia and myofascial pain syndrome, these trigger points become a major issue, causing widespread pain and discomfort.
Trigger points can also cause pain in areas of the body other than where they are specifically located. This is a phenomenon known as “referred pain.” People can have any number of these tender areas on their body; there’s no average or typical number for a given condition. Each of these factors can make trigger points complicated to address, and many physicians do not fully understand how to treat this condition successfully. At Mitchell Medical Group, this is an area we handle all the time. We know what to do to bring some relief to our patients who suffer with these symptoms.
Trigger Point Therapy Techniques
If you are experiencing trigger points, you’ll already be familiar with some of the related issues, such as reduced mobility due to pain and muscular weakness. These factors can significantly reduce quality of life, and they can also become increasingly painful if left untreated.
Help for trigger point pain is available, and we know how to approach this type of muscle pain in a way that can provide some much-needed relief for those who suffer from it. Common traditional approaches such as rest and physical therapy are often not enough to address this complicated issue. Treatment typically consists of a multipronged therapy that combines a number of different approaches, ranging from manual techniques to those that utilize tools or technology, such as trigger point injections or shockwave therapy. We employ whatever combination of methods will address your particular set of circumstances to provide you with relief from the pain and treatment for the underlying issue.
